Demystifying Symmetric Smoothing Filters

چکیده
Many patch-based image denoising algorithms can be formulated as applying a smoothing filter to the noisy image. Expressed as matrices, the smoothing filters must be row normalized so that each row sums to unity. Surprisingly, if we apply a column normalization before the row normalization, the performance of the smoothing filter can often be significantly improved. Prior works showed that such performance gain is related to the Sinkhorn-Knopp balancing algorithm, an iterative procedure that symmetrizes a row-stochastic matrix to a doublystochastic matrix. However, a complete understanding of the performance gain phenomenon is still lacking. In this paper, we study the performance gain phenomenon from a statistical learning perspective. We show that SinkhornKnopp is equivalent to an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm of learning a Product of Gaussians (PoG) prior of the image patches. By establishing the correspondence between the steps of Sinkhorn-Knopp and the EM algorithm, we provide a geometrical interpretation of the symmetrization process. The new PoG model also allows us to develop a new denoising algorithm called Product of Gaussian Non-Local-Means (PoGNLM). PoG-NLM is an extension of the Sinkhorn-Knopp and is a generalization of the classical non-local means. Despite its simple formulation, PoG-NLM outperforms many existing smoothing filters and has a similar performance compared to BM3D.

Symmetrizing Smoothing Filters
We study a general class of nonlinear and shift-varying smoothing filters that operate based on averaging. This important class of filters includes many well-known examples such as the bilateral filter, nonlocal means, general adaptive moving average filters, and more. (Many linear filters such as linear minimum mean-squared error smoothing filters, Savitzky–Golay filters, smoothing splines, an...
متن کاملHazards of Digital Smoothing Filters as a Preprocessing Tool in Multivariate Calibration
The efficacy of smoothing first-order data as a preprocessing method for multivariate calibration is discussed. In particular, the use of symmetric smoothing filters (such as Savitzky–Golay filters) is examined from the perspective of calibration performance, in contrast with past studies based on univariate signal-to-noise improvement. It is shown mathematically that in the limit of a perfect ...

متن کاملOn the evaluation of edge preserving smoothing filter
For mapping or object identification, the edges possess important information. It would be desirable to preserve the edges in the original image, while applying smoothing filter to reduce the influence of noise. A number of filters are available for this purpose, including the Mean Filter, Median Filter, Kuwahara Filter, and Symmetric Nearest Neighbor Filter (SNNF). This study investigates the ...
متن کاملImage Abstraction Using Anisotropic Diffusion Symmetric Nearest Neighbor Filter
Image abstraction is an increasingly important task in various multimedia applications. It involves the artificial transformation of photorealistic images into cartoon-like images. To simplify image content, the bilateral and Kuwahara filters remain popular choices to date. However, these methods often produce undesirable over-blurring effects and are highly susceptible to the presence of noise...
